The Günne - Brüningsen airfield
The local population called this wooded area an "airfield". However, the area was a training ground for German Luftwaffe fighter pilots. See Wikipedia "Jagdgeschwader 134 Horst Wessel"
The II. Group of this unit was stationed in Werl.

Information about the former airfield site can be found on the information board. The illustrative object shows a cement bomb that could be reassembled from individual parts.

The Werl airbase was completed in 1936. The single-engine fighter planes took off from there with bombs suspended underneath and with live machine gun ammunition. Flying low, they then shot at targets or dropped the bombs on marked targets in the area.
From the beginning of the Second World War, the fighter squadron was involved in missions on the front lines. According to contemporary witnesses, training was still carried out here during the war until around 1944. After the end of the war, the area was only partially cleared.
Nature recovered.
